Since 2003, I’ve had the privilege of working with the incredibly inspiring and endlessly energetic Manu Dibango—the godfather of Cameroonian Funk and Soul, and the mastermind behind the global hit Soul Makossa. Though based in Paris, his spirit and music had a universal reach.

In 2003, I was invited to create a program centered around his music for the Metropole Orkest (thanks to Gert-Jan Blom for connecting us). True to his creative nature, Manu never wanted to repeat the same repertoire. Instead, he sent me handwritten scores filled with his arrangements, orchestration ideas, and sketches. Countless hours were spent on the phone discussing these concepts, his warm and comforting bass voice always punctuated with laughter.

In 2019, Manu entrusted me with writing and conducting one of his long-cherished dream projects: Safari Symphonique. It was an absolute joy to collaborate on this large-scale endeavor. Tragically, in the midst of the tour—featuring partnerships with national orchestras across France—Manu left us.

Yet, his vibrant energy remains palpable, and his voice continues to echo in our hearts and minds. Thank you, Manu, for the music, the friendship, and your boundless energy.
